Skins Controversy

Skins US
Whoa, I had no idea there was such a huge controversy about this show in the US. Apparently the content is too mature to be shown on MTV and is not appropriate for teens. My opinion? That's crazy!

Okay, some of the content on this show is a little bit mature, but it's no worse than any other show, in my opinion. Think about Jersey Shore! Just because it's not scripted doesn't mean that it's any more acceptable. Does it? In every episode they talk about sex, or more specifically "getting it in." How is that any more acceptable? Because they are adults? Doesn't mean that your teen considers them as adults, and won't mimic it.

I personally think that people are overreacting to this show's content. Parents are saying that it's not appropriate for their children and then they let them watch shows like Jersey Shore and The Real World.

I guess the issue is that the actors are younger, and people are saying it's like child pornography. But here's the truth, had these actors been older, and in their 20's like every other show. People would be complaining about how the actors are too old to be playing teens. The fact that the actors in this show are the proper age is part of what sets it apart from every other show.

If you've seen the UK version you wouldn't be complaining. It is three times worse. All I have to say to the people complaining is, go watch a couple of episodes of the UK version of the show, and then tell me that you still think that MIV's Skins is innapropriate for teens. And don't say it's not the same because that show isn't American. It still airs in the US and any teen with an internet connection can find and watch it online.

Skins

Characters from Skins series 1
So I've started watching a new show; it's called skins. It was originally a British show and is on it's fifth season, I think, in the UK. Now, America has decided to do a remake. So far, there are only two episodes, and I think I'm already hooked. Although, I have to admit, it doesn't take me a lot to get hooked on a new show. Just a bit of teen drama and I'm in!

I watched the episodes this morning, and after the first one I wasn't exactly impressed. I thought the acting was kind of forced. But I've found that the first couple episodes of shows are usually pretty shaky so I decided to give it another shot, and watch the second one. I was pleasantly surprised, I think it really picked up in the second episode and can't wait for the third!

The show is about a group of teens living in Baltimore. It talks about sex, drugs, love, and friendships. From what I can tell, the show follows a different character every episode. I watched the first two episodes of the original, UK version as well, and the first episode is pretty much an exact remake, as well as the characters. The second, on the other hand, follows a different character than the UK's second episode, so I think that they just used the first episode as a jumping off point.

Characters from Skins series 3 & 4
The US version plays on MTV on Monday nights. Unfortunately it doesn't air in Canada, so us Eskimos will have to watch it online. Hopefully MTV Canada will pick it up!

In my opinion this show has a lot of promise, I have heard many good things about the UK version and am off to watch it now!

Jersey Shore or Jersey Bore??

Cast of Jersey Shore

I was catching up on my Jersey shore tonight... aka I had nothing better to do! I really just don't know what to think about this show, it's slightly entertaining because these people are so dumb, but it's mostly just sad and embarrassing to watch.

Which makes me wonder how is it possible that this is the show that is the most watched show on MTV, ever! Is it because people need to know that there are people out there more pathetic than themselves? Is it that we need that feeling of superiority? I really just don't know, and I find it sad that even I have been pulled into this crazy show.

Although, I am proud to admit that I have only seen a total of 5 episodes (3 this season, 1 from the first, and 1 from the second). I have a friend, who up until a week ago had never even heard of Jersey Shore, I was just like "Are you living under a rock?!" I mean, how can you have never heard of this show? People talk about it everywhere I go.

Growing Horns.

So I've started a new novel, one of the three that I took out of the library. It took me a little bit longer than I wanted to get to it though. It's called Horns by Joe Hill. I'm only like 25 ish pages in to it, but so far I find it pretty good. It's definitely unlike anything I have read before. Basically, the main character, Iggy, has woken up one morning and he has horns. Now he is discovering that he has a weird kind of persuasion over people. I don't want to say to much, because I don't know enough about the book to know if I am giving away too much.

On another note, I watched the latest episode of Pretty Little Liars and oh my god! This show just keeps me on the edge of my seat. Unfortunately, I missed last weeks episode, but i caught the gist of it. I just can't figure this show out, I think Allison is A because it said in the text, but I thought she was dead. Can't wait to find out the truth.

I am really loving that song Tonight - Enrique Inglesias, but to be honest, I like the "dirty" version better. It was my theme song for this weekend, I went to visit a bunch of friends from where I used to go to school. I also really love Ellie Goulding. My favourite songs by her are Starry Eyed and The Writer. It definitely took me a few listens to get into it, but now I love her.

First Post!

Just got my very first blog set up. Pretty excited. I guess I should introduce myself. I'm T. I am 20 years old.. I am currently not going to school. I'm taking the year off and then I will be going back next September. I do work though... occasionally.

I guess I started this blog because I need something to do. And what's better than to talk about your favourite things? Books, music, and movies/tv shows.

Right now I am really into the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris, I just finished the 9th one. But, I think I'm going to take a little break before I read the 10th one because the 11th isn't coming out for a while. I also really love the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich! Those books are great. They are hilarious, suspenseful, sexy, and just a really fun read. They are even making a movie out of the first book (finally) starring Katherine Heigl, it's coming out in July.  They really have it all. Another book that I recently read and really enjoyed was Lullabies for Little Criminals by Heather O'Neill, although it was a bit depressing, it was a really good book, and quite eye-opening.

I have made a promise to myself that I will try out some new books, I went on the website for my local library and put a hold on three books that I would normally never have even looked twice at. My goal: finish 2 of them. Ideally I would read all 3, but let's not get ahead of ourselves here. If I'm going to put it in writing on the internet then I'm not going to be making any promises I can't keep! The books I put on hold are: Horns by Joe Hill, Solar by Ian McEwen, and Await Your Reply by Dam Chaon. I don't really know what any of these books are going to be about, and I think that's going to be part of the fun of it.

Now on to TV and movies. Well I basically will watch anything. My favourite movies though... Hmmm.... Well the movie I've probably watched the most in my life (other than the disney movies I watched on repeat as a child) would have to be She's the Man. I think it's absolutely hilarious. But I think it's really because I love Amanda Bynes, she's so funny, I think I've seen everything that she has been in. Some other movies that I absolutely love are the X-Men movies, and not just because of Hugh Jackman. I think those movies are great, I think it's because I kind of have a thing for the supernatural, if you can even call x-men supernatural.

TV shows that I love... well basically all the girly ones and then some, Gossip Girl, 90210, The Vampire Diaries, True Blood, Weeds, The Office, Modern Family (my new obsession), How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, Heartland, and my favourite: Degrassi =D   And a bunch more that I can't think of.   ...As I said, I'm not going to school right now, so I have a lot of time on my hands, and I spend that time watching TV. (and while I watch TV I attempt to crochet)

Music wise... Well I like a bunch of stuff, at this very second I am listening to Burial - Miike Snow, the song before that was The Chain - Fleetwood Mac and before that was Bruno Mars, so I think my taste varies quite a bit. I love suggestions too.

Well, that was an extremely long post considering at the beginning I didn't even know where to start. I guess my goal with this blog is to post something at least once a week. And hopefully by writing this blog I will learn a little about myself, and grow as a person, and hopefully into a better writer, is that possible? I hope it is.

I will try to post when I am done reading those books to give a review and what not.

Ciao for now!
